Functional Medicine Cost: What Are You Actually Paying For?

Oct 21, 2026

How much does functional medicine cost? It’s one of the first questions people ask Functional Medicine of Houston, and it deserves a straightforward answer.

My professional fees are $500 for the first appointment and $750 for the second. Laboratory testing generally ranges from $500 to $3,000, depending on the number and type of tests your case calls for. That puts the typical initial investment at $1,750 to $4,250.

That’s a significant commitment, so here is exactly what it covers: a detailed review of your health history, carefully selected testing, hours of personal analysis, and a protocol I develop for you as a functional medicine doctor, not one assigned from a template.

Key takeaways

  • The first phase of care typically costs $1,750 to $4,250: $1,250 in professional fees for two appointments, plus $500 to $3,000 in lab testing.
  • Lab costs vary because tests are chosen for each patient. You’ll know the cost of your testing before you decide to move forward.
  • I personally conduct both appointments, analyze every result, and build every protocol, spending roughly 4 to 8.5 hours on each case.
  • The practice is cash-pay and doesn’t accept insurance or Medicare, though HSA and FSA funds may be eligible.

What Functional Medicine Costs at Functional Medicine of Houston

I explain my fees before anyone becomes a patient:

Service Fee
First appointment (60 to 90 minutes) $500
Second appointment (about 2 hours) $750
Individualized laboratory testing $500 to $3,000
Typical initial investment $1,750 to $4,250

The two appointments are a fixed $1,250 in professional fees. Laboratory testing is a separate expense, and it is the part that varies from person to person.

Why Your Lab Testing Cost Can’t Be Quoted in Advance

I don’t order the same tests for every patient, and I can’t responsibly choose them until I’ve reviewed your health history and we’ve had our first consultation.

Most of my patients need two or three carefully selected tests, occasionally a fourth, out of the hundreds available. Depending on your situation, they may look at nutritional status, metabolic function, digestive health, adrenal hormone patterns, food sensitivities, or environmental exposures, including mold.

Unnecessary tests add expense without adding useful information. Once I’ve chosen yours, you’ll know what they cost before you decide whether to proceed. You can read more about my approach to functional medicine lab testing.

What Your Fees Cover

Your 24-Page Health History

Before our first appointment, you complete a comprehensive questionnaire covering your symptoms, lifestyle, environmental exposures, prior evaluations, and what you’ve already tried. It also builds a timeline. Did several symptoms start together, or after a particular event or exposure? That history guides our first conversation and my choice of tests.

Your First Appointment: 60 to 90 Minutes

Your first appointment is with me directly, not a nurse or health coach. We review your history and how your concerns developed, and at the end I determine which tests are appropriate. It is not a short conversation followed by a predetermined testing package. All appointments are by telemedicine, so I work with patients throughout Texas.

The Work You Don’t See: One to Five Hours of Analysis

This is the most misunderstood part of my fee, because it happens when you aren’t present. Once results arrive, I review them alongside your history, looking for patterns. Sometimes results seem to contradict each other, and sometimes unrelated findings point to the same area.

Depending on the testing, this takes one to five hours, and from it I develop a protocol built on your findings rather than a generic plan.

Your Second Appointment: About Two Hours

We go through your results in detail, with copies in front of you. I explain what the findings show, which patterns matter and how they shape your protocol, and we take time for every question. No one should leave confused about their results.

How the Time Adds Up

Part of the process Approximate time
First consultation 1 to 1.5 hours
Laboratory analysis and protocol development 1 to 5 hours
Second consultation 2 hours
Total initial professional time 4 to 8.5 hours

That doesn’t include calls, emails, or texts between visits. Calls and emails are returned the same day whenever possible, and texts usually within an hour. At follow-ups, we revisit every concern you started with, and I adjust the protocol when something isn’t progressing as expected.

Why Functional Medicine Costs More Than a Typical Visit

Most healthcare appointments last about 15 to 20 minutes. There is a place for that kind of care, but my practice works differently.

Many people who contact me have had health concerns for years, even decades, and have already seen several providers. Taking a comprehensive look at how different systems in the body may be functioning takes time, so I see only one or two patients a day.

At my functional medicine clinic, I personally conduct both consultations, evaluate every result, and develop each protocol rather than delegating to staff. That is the main reason my fees are structured as they are.

Is Functional Medicine Covered by Insurance or Medicare?

Functional Medicine of Houston is a cash-pay practice and doesn’t accept private insurance or Medicare. That lets me schedule around the time each patient needs and choose tests based on your situation rather than on what a plan covers.

HSA and FSA funds may be eligible for some services or testing, so confirm with your plan administrator. You can keep seeing your primary care provider while you work with me, and you should always consult your prescribing provider before changing or stopping any medication.

Is Functional Medicine Worth the Investment?

That depends on your circumstances, priorities, and finances. Several thousand dollars is not a small decision.

Many people who contact me have already spent considerable time and money on concerns like chronic fatigue, thyroid symptoms, or ongoing digestive problems and still have unanswered questions. What they’re paying for here is my direct involvement in every step of finding out why.

After about 20 years in practice, I’ve learned that two people with similar symptoms can have very different circumstances. No responsible practitioner can guarantee a result. What I can promise is the time to review your information carefully and explain my findings.

My goal is also not to keep you as a patient forever. As patients reach their goals, many move to periodic lab work every six months to a year.

Questions to Ask Before Choosing a Functional Medicine Practice

Whichever practice you choose, ask these before committing:

  1. Will I work directly with the practitioner, or with other staff members?
  2. How much time is set aside for the initial consultation?
  3. How are lab tests selected, and are they included in the quoted fees or charged separately?
  4. Who personally analyzes my results, and will I get a detailed explanation of them?
  5. What happens if I’m not making the progress I expected?
  6. What other expenses should I anticipate?

A lower price doesn’t mean the same services, and a higher one doesn’t guarantee better results. If you’re still weighing the approach itself, see our guide to whether functional medicine is legitimate.
